How do I get peace?
Often, we think that peace will come when our life and our world are in order — when we have a less stressful job or less on our to-do list. You may often find yourself looking to the next season, hoping that things will settle in your life. But you can have peace right now. Peace isn’t dependent on our life circumstances. So even if the situation that’s causing you stress, pain, or turmoil doesn’t go away — even if things get worse — you can still have peace.
Jesus gives us peace, just like he gave himself. His peace is inseparable from his presence. The angels declared “peace on earth” at the announcement of the birth of Jesus (Luke 2:14). After Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead three days later, the first thing he said to the disciples after his resurrection was, “peace be with you” (John 20:19). And when Jesus ascended into heaven, peace was his parting gift (John 14:27). If we look at the life of Jesus, we see how he was able to experience peace during all of the difficulties he endured. It was his constant communion with God that surrounded and rooted his life in peace.
What is communion with God?
Trust
We can’t find rest until we trust. Jesus trusted the Father. Just days before Jesus would be crucified, he prayed this prayer, “Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine” (Luke 22:42). Jesus trusted God’s plan and will for his life. You can pray this same prayer today. When you open your heart and life to God and surrender to his leading, it is in that place you can find rest.
Oração
Talking to God is a great way to express our fears and concerns and replace them with his peace. God wants to be the one you talk to when you’re feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders. Take some time to talk to God about how you’re feeling. You can even use a journal to write down your thoughts.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).
Holy Spirit
When Jesus ascended to heaven, he told the disciples, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and remind you of all that I said to you.” (John 14:26). Peace is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you with his peace and presence right now. He was sent to be our advocate and to always point us back to the truth.
